Tidbits

The 2009 Marcel the Monkey player projections are out for your viewing pleasure.  Be sure to sit down before opening.

A couple of fast stats from the bottom of the 2008 dog pile for you:

Joe Kerrigan has his work cut out for him.

And yes, I have found some optimistic stats, if you can believe it.  I have one of my three-part series posts coming up where I’ll show you some of those.

A quick question from a reader I thought would share the answer with others:

Who are the players in your banner and why is the second player upside down?“

Great question and one I should have already answered.  Left to right, Brad Lincoln, Jose Tabata, Pedro Alvarez, Andrew McCutchen, and Shelby Ford.  The reason I put Tabata’s picture upside down is because he’s a bit more of a free spirit than the other players are, although McCutchen can be a card himself.

Brutal:

“2008’s Worst Pitcher [in MLB] Was… Tom Gorzelanny.. [who was] expected to take a step forward or at least maintain his productivity, not to regress to the point of complete ineffectiveness.” – Peter Fritsch at Dugout Central

He’s right in that Gorzy had a poor ERA, but the fact Mr. Fritsch failed to even mention, much less consider, Gorzelanny’s horrendous innings pitched explosion from 2006 – 2007 (+40) leaves me questioning his announcement that, even to him, whoever he is, Gorzy was the worst pitcher in the game.

No doubt about it – Gorzy was pretty bad plus he reported to camp out of shape to boot.  He deserves some trashing.  So I’ll cut Mr. Fritsch some slack even though he obviously doesn’t understand the impact of year-to-year workloads.

BTW, does anyone know a guy named Carlos Silva? Check out his SNLVA in 2008.

Mark Cuban – busted.  Bummer. I wonder if he’ll be able to use Martha’s old cell if convicted?

Go check out The ‘Burgh Blues.. a newer Pirates blog at MLBlogs.

Attention Pirates front office – this 17 year old has a passion for the game and wishes to spend his next summer as an Intern.

Woaaaah. Thanks for the shout out bro. I’d LOVE to be an intern if anyone is listening. Aside from my man Jake, I know an extreme and excessive amount of information about the Pittsburgh Pirates… and for that matter – baseball.

In terms of Gorzelanny – If he wins 10 games next year (with a 3, 4, or even 5 ERA) Id be content. ERA means diddily squat if the team behind the pitcher isn’t producing.

He won 6 games folks. With a 6 ERA… but even so. Does anyone know how many wins the team leader had? Maholm with 9. If we had a staff where 4/5 members won 8+ games… life would be good.
