On The Cheap: FLASH! Bucs grab situational southpaw

Quick post this eve as I’m traveling –

A reader asked in yesterday’s thread:

What is the over/under on Jake being able to go at least two weeks without writing a sentence advocating the demotion/trade/position switch for Ryan Doumit and/or another starting catcher?

I’ll put him out of his misery with this post.  The Bucs have been discussing Doumit playing some first base next year.  More on this over the next week after I speak to a few more people.

It looks like we found our minimum wage situational lefty for 2010.  Look for us to grab a few more minimum wage pros so that the front office can use that ever infamous statement:  ‘there will be plenty of competition for positions this spring … ‘

Go Bob go.

The one we refused to sign is putting up some very impressive numbers, so says Baseball America.

Justin Thomas is just as wild as Donnie Veal if not wilder 6 bb/9, over 7.7 k per 9. He’s a young arm.

In my opinion, Scheppers not signing here was dumb on his part. The Bucs were reportedly offering around 1 mil. and he signed for 1.25 mil. So for 250,000 he loses out on a year of development time and being a year closer to FA.

That’s also the exact way I see it. He held out a year for peanuts. I think the Rangers had the leverage since Scheppers had already sat out a year. If he had gone back in the draft, he would have been a joke. It’s just a shame he was too greedy to sign with the Pirates from the start…he’d look pretty nice along side some of the other arms we have in a few years.

I feel as though Scheppers medicals were not all clear for him to drop to the spot he was drafted in. Regardless of how he pans out, it seems like most teams deemed the money was not worth the risk.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that there is entirely too much spitting going on during the game…or is that just me

Rather have Doumit in right and Jones at first. Doumit has a great arm and PNC’s right field is not that difficult to play.

A little off topic, but I was changing over my calendar today at work as I’m taking off soon. They must print the MLB wall calendars waaay early, because who’s photo is on the November 2009 page of the calendar? Jason Bay. He was traded on July 31, 2008. Gotta stare at that all month long.

Whats the story on our new firstbase coach?

  • BuccoMike said:

ahh, Ex bucco all star 2b Carlos Garcia the new first base coach. Good for Carlos he’s been with the buccos for a while.

    Jake,

Thanks for addressing my post on the other thread. I think the Pirates are making a mistake if they try and move him to another position. He doesn’t have the bat to make him worth playing at 1st. His real value is as a catcher. I think you are overplaying his deficiencies as a catcher, just as I think the Pirates may be overplaying the ability of their starters.

Nutting has to go. You will not see a winning team in Pgh till he sells to a owner who really wants to be a winner. Nutting will keep doing the same ole buy players cheap, develope them then trade them when they reach their potential and he will not pay to keep them. Nutting we are not stupid we know what you are up to and always will be.
