Quick Super Bowl Notes

– Yusmeiro Petit was DFA’d by the Mariners Saturday and Neal Huntington better be all over him like a fly on crap.  He’s a 13%+ plus curveball guy who fits PNC to a tee.  I’m not as strong on Donnelly’s arm staying attached so I could see Huntington grabbing him off the wire if someone doesn’t trade for him.  However, I wouldn’t trade for him.

– Saints by 6

– One reader passed along an interesting thought about the Bucs spending for Johnny Damon, but I don’t see a match.

– Saints by 6

– Several readers have sent me links to discussion forums and blogs where the Pirate Nation are attacking each other left and right over “the plan” and its viability.  That’s hilarious.  How ironic is it that the apologists all want everyone to wait and see if Nutting starts coughing up some dough almost a half decade from now when McCutchen gets ready to leave.  Ok, so the club will probably offer him a long-term deal before that but, if you are Cutch, would you take it?  Sure, you don’t mind taking a hometown discount for your arb years but you sure as hell don’t give the Pirates one day of free agency unless they pay through the nose and there’s no way Nutting does that.  The apologists will figure things out one day.. we know better here.

– did I say Sants by 6?

Back Monday night!

Petit’s a flyball pitcher with a horrendous HR rate. Just sayin’.

Nutting will never spend money. Alvarez will be a 15 mill a year player before its all said and done. If Nutting spends 5 mill on one player hes ready to have a heart attack. Its too bad the guy doesn’t have a heart.

Nutting will pay. e.g. he paid Morris…$10 mil to sit at home…The only young guys I see from the past few years were Ramirez and Bonds, and I’m not sure Nutting had much influence when Bonds left. The Pirates were in a stranglehold when they dumped Ramirez. Their finances have improved since then.

I do not know Nutting and really don’t care. I do think they are working on building a sustainable competitive team, using sound baseball and financial planning. Nothing wrong with that. They seem to be following the examples of Milwaukee, Tampa bay, Minnesota, AND also the Steelers when Noll came in, and the Penguins of Lemiux/Burkle.

The critical focus is how well they judge and develop talent. When Jake focus’ on those analysis he is top drawer IMHO! Not perfect, and likely not always correct, but offers thoughtful insight.

Arangure (via Twitter) writes that the A’s have agreed to terms with Michael Feliz, a right-hander from the Dominican Republic. The deal, which is still pending a physical and an age investigation, will provide Feliz with an $800K bonus. The Dominican Prospect League website says that the 6’4, 200-pound hurler is 16-years-old.

Thank god we built that Dominican facility.

Nutting and boys aren’t going to accept mediocrity. They are building a championship caliber team. Anybody whos believes this line of BS, needs their head examined.
