Just a few rambling comments looking forward…
I keep being asked about the Nutting’s loan. I wasn’t there, I don’t know what the loan was for, and I don’t know the terms of the note. In other words, I haven’t a clue. In my own mind, the loan was the tool they used to squeeze out McClatchy. I assume since the team was unable to pay all their bills in a timely manner the year before, MLB probably [...]

I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such a poorly managed/coached game by the Cardinals as I witnessed Tuesday night. Several times they had opportunities squashed by poor coaching but none were as bad as the one in the 9th. Down 4-3 with men at first and second, Pujols hit a laser beam to Alvarez which ate him up and ran into shallow left field. Randy Winn was at second and turning the corner to head home as [...]

Before I begin, be sure to check out all the pro scouting reports at Bucs Prospects. Lots and lots of reports over the last week there and more on the way.

One look at the financial picture outlined at Deadspin today and it became clear to me why Nutting didn’t jump to become more involved as Kevin McClatchy wanted in 2006. In fact, it appears Nutting lollygagged through the entire 2007 season after taking control using the pretense of [...]

Well, it appears my beloved organization is, once again, under fire for its finances as the Pirates had to go on the defense Sunday to diffuse the negative blow. Their response was to open the books and show “selected parts of their audited statements“.
As soon as I read the word ‘selected’ I was immediately reminded of this statement by one of Bob Nutting’s friends:
“Bob is all business,” said Dr. Kenneth Nanners, an anesthesiologist in Mr. Nutting’s native [...]

I swear to God, I don’t understand why John Russell continues to have Jose Tabata sac bunt with McCutchen on base considering Tabata is hitting .346 over the last 30 days (10th most hits, 15th best batting average in the game over that period). That’s just ludicrous. And the fact Russell took the bat out of his hands twice — in consecutive at bats early in the game — doing this just blows me away because Russell knew Walker was [...]

First inning and Karstens’ body language looks odd.. maybe he’s sick or something, I don’t know.
Reyes hits a slow roller back through the box for a single and Karstens goes into shutdown mode taking a lot of time in between pitches. He acts like he has the flu or something.. breathing hard, not following through on his pitches.
Pagan pops up to second for the first out, Beltran strikes out on a foul tip as Reyes [...]

Ah, another one of those killer one-inning bursts took us down Thursday night. At least it wasn’t poor defense and poor managing (like Snyder catching) that did us in. Oh my.. I mean, how many times can a catcher call for back-to-back fastballs from an 87 MPH thrower? Did I hear someone say ‘one too many’? Yeppers.. Gabby Sanchez said thank you very much Mr. Snyder as he crossed home plate. You see, Maholm had Sanchez in a 1-2 count [...]

It’s tough watching Andrew McCutchen swing a long bat, and even tougher to watch him do it with two strikes on him resulting in a lot of meagar fly outs lately. But what’s really been brutal watching is Andrew McCutchen playing center field since early June. Balls have been clanking in and out of his glove, he’s flat-out missed fly balls he was camped under, and I’ve stopped counting the number of times he’s dove and missed the ball. [...]
